Project Summer School A.I.+LifeSciences
AI and Life Science

The Fondazione SAIHUB, the Fondazione Vita, the University of Siena and the Fondazione Monte dei Paschi di Siena, in collaboration with the Tuscan Regional Education Office, have launched the Artificial Intelligence and Life Sciences Summer School, now in its third edition. The initiative was born from the desire to bring students in their final years of high school into contact with the most advanced digital technologies used in the Life Sciences, in order to encourage them to continue their university studies or to take up highly specialised training courses required by companies in the sector. Thanks to the experience gained in previous years, the AI + Life Sciences Summer School

project is increasingly taking on a regional dimension, with the planned activities spread over a large part of Tuscany. They are aimed at students in grades III and IV of upper secondary schools and are recognised as school credits for Transversal Skills and Orientation Paths (PCTO), directly activating training pacts with individual students.
The didactic plan is particularly focused on experiential approaches, maintaining a pleasant and stimulating tone to encourage maximum student involvement, also thanks to the virtual and augmented reality laboratory equipment of the Fondazione VITA’s Joint Territorial Laboratory.

Summer School

The initiative was launched in 2021 with the initial participation of about 80 students from Siena, to continue in 2022 with 150 students between Siena, Grosseto and Volterra (PI). Due to the great interest that has grown every year, the aim for 2023 was to increase the number of students through a shorter course structure and with classes alternating between morning and afternoon. This new formula increased the success of the initiative, which was attended by over 250 students.

Residential
Summer School

On an experimental basis, a residential mode was activated in 2023, where students and their high school teachers were hosted for the five days of the Summer School at the Monasterino della Conoscenza, just outside Siena.

The activities were based on those of the regional project, with the addition of extracurricular activities in the afternoon. In the end, the students’ evaluations were better than those of their colleagues who had attended the traditional summer school. An experience to be repeated!
